Church Planting (page 2)

The following book recommendation list was provided by Marianne Holston, including the book descriptions.

Schaller, Lyle E. 44 Questions for Church Planters. Nashville: Abingdon Press, 1991.

Schaller believes church planting is the key to reaching the next generation, and addresses 44 different questions from ‘where do we begin’? To ‘where do we meet’—saying that where you meet will be an indicator of the kind of church you wish to have, as well as questions on identity—‘who’s the minister?’ denominational identity and ‘to which generation?’ There are cute, descriptive illustrations throughout.

Simson, Wolfgang. Houses That Change the World: The Return of the House Churches. Waynesboro. OM Publishing, 2001.

Simson shares a vision of bringing the church to the people, not the people to the church, seeking to restore a sense of community. Discusses everything from bridging the gap between the church of the Bible and the church of today, the nature of a house church and how it functions, the act of transitioning to models of church multiplication. This book focuses more on multiplication of existing churches than of planting churches.

Strobel, Lee. Inside the Mind of Unchurched Harry & Mary. Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 1993.

Strobel, an atheist become Christian, gives insight into how the unchurched think and the perceptions they have about us. He separates people into four categories, churched Christians, churched non-Christians, unchurched Christians and unchurched non-Christians, and gives practical advice from topics ranging from spiritual sticking points (I do believe; isn’t that enough?), to surviving a marriage to an unbelieving spouse.

Allen, Rolland. Missionary Methods: St. Paul or Ours?

Profoundly biblical, Allen "methods" are drawn from a scrupulous examination of St. Paul's own principles for missionary work.

Patterson, George and Richard Scoggins. Church Multiplication Guide: The Miracle of Church Reproduction. Pasadena: William Carey Library, 2002.

The authors, experienced church-planters, and now church-planting coaches, focus first on what Jesus teaches on repentance, baptism, love, prayer, giving and more. Saying that the most important tool for multiplying churches is complete obedience to our Lord Jesus. Part two discusses church reproduction from the various viewpoints of the people working toward that end. (i.e. evangelist, house church, mother church) He provides an appendices of Bible readings you can do with your family or small group.
